Design & Technology Intent

At Clatford Primary school we believe that every child should have equal opportunities. We believe that each child should be part of a happy and safe environment where mutual respect, co-operation and responsibility are encouraged and valued. These aims along with our school values are central to our Design and Technology teaching.

Design and technology (D&T) prepares pupils to participate in tomorrow’s rapidly changing technologies. Design and Technology is about practical problem solving and using materials available to them to solve problems in a person-made environment. The subject calls for pupils to become autonomous and creative problem solvers both as individuals and as members of a team. At primary school level, we can instil attitudes towards Design and Technology in which the children can realise that in technology there is never just one correct solution. They must look for needs, wants and opportunities, responding to them by developing a range of design ideas for making products and systems.

In their designing and making, pupils combine practical skills with an understanding of aesthetics, social and environmental issues, function and industrial practices. As they do so, they reflect on, learn from and evaluate present and past design and technology, its uses and effects. The process of identifying a need, designing a solution, building an artefact and testing and evaluating it can be most satisfying to the child.

Our aim is that the activities undertaken here in Clatford will also reflect the children's local environment and support them in the wider world.
