English
At Clatford Church of England Primary School, we believe that all children are entitled to a broad and balanced English curriculum, which is delivered in a way that recognises the varied needs of our children and allows each individual to maximise their learning potential; preparing them for the application of English skills in all other foundation subjects across our curriculum and for life beyond education.
The study of English develops children’s abilities to listen, speak, read and write for a wide range of purposes, including the communication of their ideas, views and feelings. Children are enabled to express themselves creatively and imaginatively through a rich range of writing opportunities, inspired by a number of carefully selected text journeys, that aim to inspire them to become enthusiastic and critical readers of stories, poetry and drama, as well as non-fiction and media texts. Our children will gain an understanding of how language works by looking at its patterns, structures and origins, constantly striving to expand and broaden our exposure to new vocabulary that the children will then apply in speaking, listening, reading and writing across a range of different situations and through an extensive range of cross curricular activities.
