Mathematics
Mathematics is essential for everyday life and understanding our world. It enables the development of pupils’ natural ability to think logically and solve puzzles and real life problems. Pupils learn to think creatively and make links between mathematical concepts through exploring patterns in the number system, shape, measures and statistics. They make and discuss propositions, explaining their reasoning and justifying their answers. They develop the skills, knowledge and efficient methods of calculation necessary to support their economic future and wellbeing; scientific reason and curiosity; personal resilience and love of learning and future problem-solving skills for life.
“All mathematicians share … a sense of amazement over the infinite depth and the mysterious beauty and usefulness of mathematics.” – Martin Gardner
At Clatford Primary School, we aim to develop children’s mastery of all mathematical areas through thoughtful development of fluency, understanding and reasoning across a wide range of approaches. We believe children that understand connections within mathematics become more effective mathematicians for life and so we strive to provide the children with opportunities for using concrete, visual and abstract approaches throughout each year group.
As they move through the school, children should develop an accurate use of mathematical vocabulary to go alongside this. At Clatford Primary School we seek to develop children’s accurate explanations, critical thinking and analysis of mathematical systems in order that they can make new connections, test hypotheses, justify and develop their opinions and share their ideas thoughtfully and meaningfully.
Mathematics is for everyone! At Clatford Primary School we believe that every single child can develop an understanding of mathematical systems, a fluency in mathematical calculation and a curiosity to find out more about them both. We understand that not every child will have the same journey towards those goals and through all of our learning in school we aim to provide a range of exciting, enriching, stimulating, challenging, engaging and supportive activities to best suit the full range of learners that are part of our Clatford family. Where barriers exist within children’s learning we consistently and relentlessly seek to overcome them with a firmly held belief that every child has a right to achieve mathematical success in our school.
