  • Soup Kitchen

    Fri 19 Oct 2018 Mrs Oliver-Hawkins

What a wonderful afternoon! That is the only way to describe yesterday.  Year 4 had spoken with the gardening club about the left over produce in the school garden and agreed that it would be wonderful to open a soup kitchen on the last day of half term.  They contacted the Royal Horticultural Society who were arranging a Big Soup event.  Year 4 then leapt into action! They contacted family and friends, made posters and leaflets, wrote menus and ingredients lists and created banners and bunting.  Everything was ready and in place for them to start making the soup.

So, yesterday they went up to the vegetable garden and harvested beetroot tops, radishes, spring onions and runner beans amongst others.  Carrying all of their hard work down to the classroom they were ready to chop, and chop and wash they did! By the end of the morning they had six mixing bowls of vegetables ready to be turned into delicious soup.

After school, year 4 dressed themselves in their tie dyed clothes (hand made by themselves, with beetroot grown in their garden) and prepared themselves to serve their soup.  They were not disappointed! The doors opened and friends and family swarmed in.  The children served over fifty portions of  hearty soup, along with a bread roll lovingly shaped by Year 1.  It was a truly lovely atmosphere where babies, children, parents and grandparents all sat and chatted together, enjoying the opportunity to re-tell stories of their day.

The children had already decided that they wanted to help not only their village community but the larger local community. With this in mind they had asked for donations to go to Andover Food Bank.  The children managed to raise a substantial amount that they hope will stop others being hungry in their community.

News story - May Fayre Grant

We are very pleased to announce that the school has received a grant from the Upper Clatford & Anna Valley May Fayre Committee. The May Fayre was a particular success this year and the committee were able to make a grant to the school of £600. These funds will be used towards the refurbishment of the ‘Burdock Room’ as well as the purchase of soft furnishings and play therapy equipment.

The Upper Clatford & Anna Valley May Fayre Committee have been strong supporters of the school over a number of years and the children, staff and governors are very grateful for this support.

  • Going with the Flow

    Fri 12 Oct 2018 M Kirk
Last week, Year 5 went on a field-trip to the Oakhanger Stream and visited the Gilbert White Field Studies Centre. We worked with a local geographer to perform experiments to help us understand transportation, erosion and deposition along the river. She also helped us in developing our understanding of the relationships between sources of water and how settlements develop. We even stomped up to the top of a large hill in the afternoon and viewed a real V-shaped valley in the distance. Year 5 were curious and professional in their studies, approaching their experiments with rigour and enthusiasm. As their teacher, I was very proud! Well done Year 5.
