  • Skip 2 B Fit!

Wed 30 May 2018 Miss Green

Calling all enthusiastic skippers who want to improve, push themselves and be the best they can be!

The children (and staff!) skip for two minutes, turning the ropes as many times as you can. After two minutes we record our scores and write the number down.

After two minutes, we have another go to try and beat our previous PB (personal best!).

We all participated and had some amazing scores which we will try very hard to beat.

We have a scoresheet for each class. It is important to try and beat your own previous score, not your friend's score!

Skip 2 B Fit skipping ropes are availble to buy from the school office for £5 in a variation of colours!

    Wed 16 May 2018 Mrs Oliver-Hawkins
Today Year 4 have been starting their long journey to become amazing navigators, by learning 4 and 6 point grid references as well as how to walk on a compass bearing.  It was a very busy afternoon!
  • We Did It!

    Tue 15 May 2018 M Kirk

Over the last few years, our school has been working very hard to make sure our children are as equipped as they can be to face the challenges of growing up in a world of connected computers. As part of this we have made sure that children have access to discussions and lessons regarding their e-safety in every year group in the school. All of our staff and some of the governors have also been trained in what the dangers can be for children when going online and what we need to be aware of in our school community in order to keep them safe. If you are a parent at the school you should have received a communication over the last week detailing how you can raise your own awareness by completing an online course yourself.

Another thing we have done at Clatford is to raise awareness with our ever vigilant E-safety council who are spread across different classrooms in the school. They ensure children always have somewhere to go if they are worried about things they have seen online.

National Online Safety (NOS) are an approved provider of E-safety training across the country and they have agree that as a school we have done enough to meet their high e-safety standards. As a result they have awarded us with the online safety mark (pictured below) as a recognition of how much we all do together, in our school community, to make sure our children stay safe.

    Well done everyone!

  • Beating our fears!

    Tue 15 May 2018 Mrs Oliver-Hawkins
Last week, Year 4 had the opportunity to conquer their fears! With a great deal of excitement we set off in two mini busses to Golden Gecko in Romsey.   The children tackled any fears, and gave each other tonnes of encouragement, to see how high they could go on the auto-belays and then to work together as a team on the tower.  In this session they were taught how to belay each other to keep their friends safe.  They were wonderful, even managing to belay their teachers!
  • Egg-citing News

    Tue 15 May 2018 M Kirk

Year 5 has been inundated with excited onlookers today from amongst the children and staff alike. 3 weeks ago today we set our 6 eggs in an incubator and have since then carefully monitored the temperature and humidity. We have also been turning them regularly and have candled them (using strong light to examine an egg's contents prior to hatching) on occasions to make sure they are developing well.

It is my exciting job today to announce that over the last 24 hours we have had 3 chicks hatch and they are all looking healthy (if a little tired) and happy. I managed to record one of them as they emerged, which I will post on the media section of the website at a later date, but in the meantime please enjoy these before and after pics of the newest member of Clatford's extended family.

  • Year 4 Update from the Website Team

    Fri 04 May 2018 A Pupil

Clatford Website Team Update – Year 4

    Maths

This term, years 4, 5, and 6 have been advancing their maths skills in order to get their bronze, silver and gold maths awards. Quite a lot of people have earned their bronze badge, knowing all your times tables up to 12x12 backwards, forwards, and inside-out. And you have to do each question in under 8 seconds. Only the fast few have got their silver, knowing your times tables crossways, slantways, and middleways , knowing all your squares and square roots and doing sums like 400x8 and 6ox70 all in under 5 seconds per question. So far only two people have managed to get their gold, knowing all of bronze and silver and being able to add, subtract, divide and even do the decimals times tables, also they need to do their 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17 times tables. But lots more people are very close and it will be nice to see more golds out and about on peoples uniforms.

In year 4, in maths this week they have been experimenting with dividing by 10 and 100 and seeing where you need to move the columns and where the decimal point needs to go. They have been doing sums like 22/10=2.2 and 324/100=3.24. All in all year 4 have really enjoyed this subject and have learnt a lot from this week.

In year 4 in literacy this week they have been trying to recreate a picture book that they looked at in guided reading except with their topics theme, sustainability. They worked in pairs to do some careful planning but had to use different text to each other. The best bit was… that you got to draw your own pictures to go with your sustainability story, and the most common themes were: recycling, public transport and plastics in the ocean. When they have finished their stories they will share them with years R and 1. They can’t wait to see what the year R’s and 1’s will think of them.

In year four they are learning how to play the violin. Each term, they play a different instrument and they are onto violin. It is really fun doing lessons because you can try some things that you have never tried before. We know you could love it and take it as a hobby or you could decide to take it further and do it professionally. It is really good that the school are giving people new opportunities and we hope that they will continue to do so.

In year 4, in art this week they have been trying to draw some famous buildings such as the basket building (in the USA), the Eiffel tower (in Paris), and the Guggenheim museum (in Bilbao, Spain). They found it quite difficult but fun and interesting.

In year 4, in science they have been learning about solids, liquids and gases. They have been learning about the properties of these stoles such as solids keep their shapes and don’t pour and gases fill up all the space that they have and can change their shape. They really enjoyed it and found it really interesting to learn about liquid acting as solids such as oobleck.

We have enjoyed talking to Year 4 about all their learning.

  • Introducing our vegetable garden!

    Thu 03 May 2018 Mrs Oliver-Hawkins
KS2 have been very keen to start growing vegetables in school.  They have been thinking about sustainability and how we, as a school, could improve.  They decided that they would love to grow some of their own snacks.  So... with the help of Houghton Fishing Club, who so kindly donated the wood and their time, the new bed was created.  The new gardening club has planted a variety of seeds including beetroot, pak choi, tomatoes, cucumbers and radishes.  At the moment these are germinating in our green house, and hopefully very soon the rest of the school will be able to enjoy freshly grown school produce at breaktimes!
  • Online Safety Update

    Tue 01 May 2018 M Kirk

I have been asked a lot of questions by parents over the last few weeks about children's use of online resources and the games that some children play online. This is an important issue for all of our children as we know that understanding the online world, that is changing quicker than we can keep up with, can be challenging.

Over the next few weeks you should receive a communication from the school detailing how you can access a set of online training resources if you are interested in learning more about this issue. You can also find the link to this online training from our new section of the school website (find it in the parents section) all about keeping children safe online. We are hoping to work towards getting our online safety award as a school and we think that the more people that have access to this training, the safer our children will be. I hope you find it useful in supporting your child, but in the meantime please contact me if there is a particular website or online activity you are concerned about and I'll do my best to add the information.

Thank you for your continued support with this and I know that between us all we will make sure the children are as safe as they can be online - both at home and at school.
